The Book of Philippians Part II: An Attitude of Joy
Scripture:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves… In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:3–5 NIV
Observation:
This week’s sermon reminded me that following Jesus means living with humility, surrender, and genuine love for others, a love that puts others before ourselves. There have been many times I haven’t lived that way. If we’re being honest, our flesh can make us competitive, judgmental, prideful, and even inconsiderate. There are moments when we preach one thing but live another.
Over the past few years, I’ve tried to do my best to align my actions with God’s will. I never want to be someone who “talks it” without “living it.” I still fall short, often. But every time I drop the ball, I pray, I get back up, and do my best to keep moving in the direction God is calling me. What convicts me most is knowing that Jesus willingly humbled Himself and became a servant, even though He had every right to glory in Himself.
Who am I to think I’ve achieved something of significance, when so much of what the world calls “success” is temporary and ultimately meaningless? The world tells us to promote ourselves, prove our worth, and make sure everyone knows what we’ve accomplished. Jesus teaches us something completely different — to humble yourself and put others before you. If we aren’t doing those things, what have we really achieved?
The real flex is being a humble servant. Not just when it’s convenient. Not just when people are watching. Not just when there’s something in it for us — but consistently, willingly, and without hesitation. It’s not about proving ourselves or earning God’s favor. God already sees us. He knows our hearts. Our responsibility is simply to be faithful and obedient. The goal isn’t to become a better version of ourselves; it is to become more like Jesus.
Application:
We must constantly check ourselves. Pastor Julius reminded us of the bracelets that read WWJD- “What Would Jesus Do?” When making any decisions, facing any challenges, or questioning our own actions, we should ask ourselves that very question, followed by:
Is what I’m doing something Jesus would do?
Is it something He would be for or against?
Is it forcefully advancing the Kingdom of God or helping the enemy gain ground?
We should pray constantly, asking God to keep our hearts humble. Pray to be like Jesus, serving His kingdom without hesitation — keeping our pride in check with our eyes fixed on Him. It’s not an easy thing to do, but we can because He tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13)
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for sending Yourself as flesh. Thank you for Your example of how we should live, act, love, and serve. Thank You for Your grace and mercy that we do not deserve. Thank You for allowing us the chance to reset, readjust, and try again. You dust us off every time we fall and help us get back on the path You have set before us. I pray You continue to walk beside us, guiding our every step. I thank You in advance for what You have done and continue to do. We would be lost without You. Keep us humble. May the glory and honor be Yours forever. In Jesus’ holy and righteous name. Amen.
